FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fall 2006 – Atlanta, Ga. – To sit through a Reggie Hines experience is to be taken on an emotional sojourn through life. The sound of his saxophone resonates through your psyche with a smooth vernacular that’s an international language called music.
For most of his life, Reggie Hines has told his life story through his music. Now a headliner for his original creations, Reggie introduces the world to his debut album Do You See What I See. “This album is a reflection of my life and what I’ve been through and what I’ve seen…my music goes from one extreme to another at some point…I want people to be able to sit back and feel the music and let it inspire them the way it inspires me” says Reggie. This album which showcases the best of Reggie Hines could be compared to the smooth sounds of Grover Washington Jr. and the unorthodox sounds of Eric Dolphy with a taste of contemporary hip-hop.
From the musical streets of the South Bronx, New York, Reggie always knew his life would involve music. Reggie recalls waking up in the wee hours of the morning to the sounds of rhythm and blues from his fathers’ records and 8 track tapes to his mother singing through the house. “I remember my mother joining musical clubs where for only a penny, you could order a whole lot of music and pay only shipping and handling….I remember one time she bought me the compilation Soul Train album and Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder” says Reggie.
Over time, Reggie Hines searched for the right fit in his musical community. Reggie remembers, “We grew up in the church. My grandmother always had my brothers and I doing something musically in the church, but it was my father who made sure we played some kind of instrument. ” He learned to play various instruments from the drums to the bass guitar to the keyboard and finally his niche the saxophone. One particular instrument he picked up later in life is the Electronic Wind Instrument.
Thankfully, Reggie’s musical upbringing provided opportunities to tour the world and work with some of the greatest musical talents such as Luther Vandross, Regina Belle, Gerald Alston of the Manhattans and Angie Stone. As a composer, Reggie was the recipient of an ASCAP award for When You Get Right Down To It, a song he wrote for the late great Phyllis Hyman.
